The main focus of this report will be to analyze websites that focus around the subject of animal rights, cruelty to animals, and animal conservation. These sites present similar arguments (advancing animal welfare) and similar approaches to getting their arguments across on their individual websites. The organization of the site, text, and pictures correspond to advancing their agendas, which are easy to grasp by just a cursory glance. The main site focused on in this report will be the ASPCA. Other sites like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), The Nature Conservancy, and similar websites will be used in comparison and examples.

Writers & Developers of the ASPCA

All of the ASPCA’s main-site content is written by the organization itself. Since the ASPCA no longer accepts member contributions (they actually only allowed them for a member publication called ASPCA Action), the content is written solely by staff. These writers and content producers hide behind the headlines, press releases, and mission statements instead of naming themselves in their work. Generally, this is true of animal welfare sites’ articles and main content. Occasionally the president of the organization or a very special someone will give statements or publish articles with a clear name attached.

The “Expert Advice” column on the main page of the website seems mainly written by site writers, however there are a few instances where the “experts” are named when they have a question-answer section of their own. It is not made clear if these people are also the content producers for the whole of the “Expert Advice” section of the ASPCA. There are various departments to the ASPCA, including a development team. It’s my thought that these people are specifically in charge of the website (the other departments don’t fit that role), but the content could be across departments since they vary in expertise.

The documents written for the ASPCA are all visually similar. They are usually in the form of articles with helper images embedded throughout. Aside from the solidarity in structure, everything written by the ASPCA promotes its arguments and goals. Absolutely everything is about the animals: what the problems are, possible solutions, what the ASPCA is doing, and how “you” can help. Animal welfare sites try to make it as engaging and possibly interactive with the reader, visitor, or supporter as possible in their writing to call on emotion, give information and advice, and ‘win’ the reader over to their agenda.

Audiences & Users of the ASPCA

The ASPCA’s intended audience is composed of those compassionate toward their cause: preventing animal cruelty. Within that audience, there are many subgroups that benefit from the ASPCA’s website and would turn to it for a variety of information and interaction. For one, there are those that support the organization by joining (you receive their newsletters and can lobby for animal rights through the site). A certain portion of the audience would like donate money through the organization’s website. There is a direct donation process or you may shop in their online store.

Other users of the website are looking for information, which comes in a variety of subjects. Information on pet care, behavior, poison control, and disaster preparedness is easily accessible from the main navigation. These sections are written in article format with a separate navigation scheme detailing the individual articles within the section that won’t fit on that page view (presumably only the newest articles are listed and described). There is also a section of adoption which is not listed in “expert advice” but in ways readers/supporters can help. Here is found information on shelters, success stories, and other tips for adopting a new animal.

The ASPCA has a community discussion board used by members of the site for pleasure and for serious discussion. A blog and pressroom link allow for activists, members, and staff to keep up to date with the ASPCA’s doings and events. Their program section has information on regional programs as well as general nationwide programs. This also includes a link to a child’s version of the ASPCA “Animaland” with animation, activities, and kid-specific information about pets, jobs, and preventing cruelty.

Format & Organization of the ASPCA

The ASPCA’s organization of the website follows many conventions of the ‘animal welfare’ genre. It’s fairly easy to navigate and sort through the information presented. The front page, at first glance, is a bit hectic with a bunch of seemingly random tables with various content and pictures. However, even though a lot is presented on the front page it’s arranged in a kind of ordered chaos. It doesn’t necessarily look messy. There are other sites that look messy while actually presenting less content; the arrangement of their content and pictures doesn’t mesh well together. The ASPCA’s website is busy, but the color scheme, text/picture arrangement, and navigation do blend well together and the site as a whole is presented purposefully and neatly.
